It’s a new Sci-Fi Convention tradition – science fiction burlesque! Last year’s Alien Moulin Rouge was so successful that we’re doing it again, and this year, we’re going all out to bring you more and bigger burly-q goodness … for science! And the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life (which is technically science)!
Sunday, March 16th at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM (SLT)
Sunday, March 23rd at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM (SLT)
Gaslight Burlesque at Xin Caodi.
We are looking for performers! We’re hoping to get representation from as many groups as possible, so whether you’re a single performer or a group, we’d love to have you come shake your stuff on stage with us! Anything goes, male, female, androgynous, any race – this is science fiction burlesque and we want to showcase it all! Specifically, we want each act to be science fiction themed, and even possibly themed for fighting cancer… So a chorus line of Klingons, Cylons in nylons, viper pilots doing a striptease, or even something more abstract, is just what we want!
be warned though, this isn’t something for the faint of heart or the flighty – it’s dedicated work that involves generating ideas, building sets, scripting, choreography, costuming, performing, and most of all, a pretty big time commitment. We’ve got deadlines, workshops, and rehearsals to meet to make this show a HUGE success!
Whether you just want to hop on a poseball and perform or if you’re comfortable designing and choreographing your own act, we’ve got a place for you if you’ve got the interest, time, and dedication to stick it through! We’ll be holding a few Burlesque Basics workshops through the month of March to give everyone an idea of what we’re looking for and how to do it. Our workshop dates will be Sunday, March 16th at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM (SLT), and Sunday, March 23rd at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM (SLT) at Gaslight Burlesque at Xin Caodi.
After that, we’ll be holding regular rehearsals and workshops to help anyone out with any problems or ideas through April and part of the way through May, when we’ll start dress rehearsals. We also have plenty of people who can help build, script, and choreograph if you need assistance.
We will be having 8 to 12 shows over the course of the convention, on different days at different times in hopes of accommodating everyone’s schedules. Depending on the number of acts we have and scheduling, we’ll be changing the lineup for each show. We’ll also be doing a series of teaser posters to go out with the convention promotional material – we’d like to do at least one for each act.
The deadline for entry to participate is April 15 (tax day for us ‘muricans), so you’ve got a month to kick around ideas, as well as warm up to the idea of getting on stage and dancing in front of a bunch of people for a really good cause. It’s a lot of fun and a great learning experience!
For some examples of the kinds of things we’re going to be doing, here’s a link to Yazmin Soong’s (Yaz Chronometrist) youtube account. She has filmed several burlesque performances in SL, and hopefully this will help you decide whether this is something you’d be interested in doing.
If you’re interested in being a part of this amazing event or just curious, drop an IM on Imrhien Fargis, Yaz Chronometrist, Mikie Rhiadra, or Tray Porthos. We can answer your questions or get you signed up.
